The Hidden Impact of Cloud Computing — and What We’re Doing About It

July 21, 2025

At Majente, we rely on cloud-based tools every day—from Salesforce implementations to internal collaboration and client communications. Cloud computing enables us to work more efficiently and flexibly—but it’s easy to overlook the environmental impact behind it.

Wait—Isn’t the Cloud Emissions-Free?

Not quite. Every file stored, email sent, and automation triggered is processed by massive data centers, which consume significant amounts of electricity—often powered by non-renewable sources. Globally, cloud computing is estimated to account for around 2-3% of carbon emissions, and it’s growing fast.

As a digital-first company, we understand that while we don’t operate factories or fleets, our emissions are still real—just invisible.

How We’re Taking Responsibility

We’re currently in the early stages of identifying our cloud-related emissions and exploring how to:

  • Select low-impact tools that prioritize sustainability and efficiency
  • Limit unnecessary data processing and storage, which saves both money and emissions
  • Educate our team on how their digital habits—like file duplication, large email attachments, or always-on meetings—can quietly add up

A Mindset Shift

One of the biggest changes we’ve made is acknowledging that digital isn’t always cleaner by default. A remote-first model may reduce travel and office emissions, but the energy powering our tech stack still matters.

We’re committed to staying informed, adjusting our practices, and continuing to ask questions:

“How can we build smarter, more efficient systems—for our clients and for the planet?”

As cloud infrastructure becomes the backbone of business, we want to be among those leading the way toward cloud-conscious sustainability.

Why Even Small Tech Companies Should Make Net Zero Commitments

At Majente, we believe that climate action shouldn’t be limited to large corporations or heavy-emitting industries. In 2025, we publicly committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, aligning with global climate goals like Canada’s federal net-zero target.

How a Light Office Footprint Supports Our Sustainability Goals

Majente operates primarily as a remote and distributed team, with one small office space that is used minimally and intentionally. This hybrid setup allows us to reduce our environmental impact while still supporting collaboration when needed.
